Comparative evaluation of a new point-of-care blood electrolyte analyzer in the veterinary sector

Electrolyte monitoring plays a central role in companion animal medicine, supporting the diagnosis and management of metabolic, gastrointestinal, renal, and endocrine disorders. In the veterinary emergency and critical care (ECC) setting, having a point-of-care (POC) blood electrolyte analyzer that is both simple to use and fast to deliver results can make a measurable difference to patient outcomes.
A new study from the University of Nottingham, conducted in collaboration with Phoenix Vets (Loughborough, UK) and presented at EVECC 2026, evaluated exactly that: how the EXIAS e|1vet performs against two established veterinary electrolyte analyzers – the Siemens epoc Blood Analysis System and the IDEXX Catalyst One.
Across 69 patients (45 dogs, 24 cats), the e|1vet achieved validated agreement on all six parameters measured against the epoc system – sodium, potassium, chloride, ionized calcium, pH, and hematocrit – and matched the Catalyst One closely on potassium and chloride. The one exception, sodium versus the Catalyst One, is worth noting in context: the two predicate devices only agreed with each other on sodium at 88.1%, so the discrepancy appears to sit between the established devices rather than pointing to a limitation of the e|1vet.
Just as notable were the practical advantages: the e|1vet required only 20 microliters of blood – a fraction of what the predicate devices need – and delivered results in 25 seconds, far faster than either comparator.
The authors conclude that the e|1vet is a highly accurate blood electrolyte analyzer, offering comparable to superior accuracy while requiring less blood and delivering faster results – making it a strong option for electrolyte monitoring in small animal veterinary practice.
